May 13, 2014
As part of the campaign “The European Union close to you” the implementation team of the program “Young Europeans At Heart” in cooperation with the Cyprus Organisation Youth Centers and Neapolis University in Cyprus organized 13 May 2014 a Debate. Attendees had the opportunity to learn and discuss the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament’s powers by George Markopouliotis, head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus and representatives of the YEAH program, the Cyprus Youth Organisation and Centres Youth Council. Mr. Markopouliotis stressed the importance of the European elections, since it is the first elections in which the European Parliament under the Treaty of Lisbon 2009 has enhanced responsibilities and powers. In this case, he said, the new appointment for the post of European Commission President to be held in 2014, will build on the results of the upcoming elections, which means that our vote acquires enormous importance. The event welcomed Dr. Andreas Moleksis, Director of Administration and Finance of Neapolis University in Cyprus. Mr. Moleskis stated between others that “Welcome to the most southern and eastern part of the European Union, where economic and social consequences of the economic crisis and the Eurogroup decisions are depressing. Welcome to the Town of Paphos, where the wrath of citizens is stronger in Cyprus for the unfortunate decisions of our European partners.” Concluding he added that “it is us who will choose the future Europe. The future of Europe will be through these elections for Members of the European Parliament. ”
