Neapolis University Pafos (NUP) is proud to announce the establishment of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence AI-2-TRACE-CRIME, supported by the European Union. This is a pioneering initiative dedicated to the application of trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) in asset recovery, anti-money laundering (AML), and crime prevention. This prestigious project has been awarded funding by the European Union, marking a significant milestone for NUP and the wider academic community.
The Centre aims to become a leading hub of knowledge, research, teaching, training, and outreach on the intersection of AI and crime prevention within the European Union and beyond. Led by Dr. G. Pavlidis, Associate Professor at the School of Law and holder of Jean Monnet Chair (2020) and UNESCO Chair (2023), the Centre will leverage interdisciplinary expertise from NUP’s Departments of Law, Computer Science, and History, Politics, and International Studies.
The Centre will foster synergies between European studies and AI research, involving high-level experts and three participating NUP departments. New and redesigned modules on AI, cybersecurity, EU law, and criminal law will be introduced. An asynchronous MOOC will be developed to promote Open Education. An annual executive training program for legal and IT professionals will be launched. The Centre will produce academic articles, working papers, and a comprehensive Research Handbook, contributing to the academic discourse on AI in crime prevention. The Centre will host webinars, conferences, public debates, and maintain an active online presence to ensure broad dissemination of its work.
The Centre’s mission aligns with NUP’s commitment to fostering an innovative, engaging, and student-focused environment, promoting high-quality education, research, and community engagement. This initiative not only enhances NUP’s academic offerings but also contributes to global efforts in using AI ethically and effectively in the fight against crime.
