Stepnova is a fiction writer, screenwriter, and literary translator. Marina Stepnova studied translation at the Literary Institute. She has been publishing fiction short stories in prestigious “thick” literary journals since 2003. In 2021, the novel “The Garden” won the Yasnaya Polyana Prize (readers’ choice) and was shortlisted for the Big Book Award. In 2020, “The Garden” was shortlisted for the National Book of the Year. In 2012, the novel “The Women of Lazarus” received third place in the Big Book Award (jury and readers’ choice) and was shortlisted for the Russian Booker Prize, the National Bestseller Prize, and the Yasnaya Polyana Prize. Her prose has been translated into 29 languages.
Stepnova works as a scriptwriter with prominent directors – Kantemir Balagov, Avdotya Smirnova, to name a few.
Stepnova has also translated the Romanian playwright Mihail Sebastian’s play The Star Without a Name, which has been produced in many countries.
