Bishop Georgios of Paphos, Mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phaedonos and the President of the Board of Neapolis University Paphos, Michael Leptos, signed on the 29th October 2015 a Protocol for the establishment of the Centre for Historical Studies and Research Paphos. The main purpose of the centre will be to research, study and promote the history and culture of Paphos, the creation of a historical archive of Paphos and the preparation and implementation of a research program on the history of the city.
The centre is supported by a team of research partners including known scholars of history and culture of Paphos. The centre’s headquarters will be based at Neapolis University Paphos.
The research and historical focus of the centre will include a wide range of issues including topics such as the history of Paphos during the years of Ottoman ruling, the years of being under the British Empire, and the first period of the establishment of The Republic of Cyprus. Other issues will also be covered such as the history of municipalities, the history of the church, Paphos socialites and contributors to its society, wineries, tourism, medical care, local saints, media, the period of the struggle with EOKA, elections and many more historical topics of Paphos.
The Mayor, the Bishop and the President of the University of Neapolis stressed the importance of having the Centre for the Development of Paphos’ historical studies and emphasized the importance of this initiative which involved the involvement of the three main sectors of the city and provinces.
The first of many programmes the centre for historical studies and research of Paphos plans to focus on “People of Paphos.” The official opening ceremony of the centre is planned for end of January.
