NUP Human Rights Observatory

The Observatory is a research institute of the Department of History, Politics and International Studies of the Neapolis University Pafos focused on human rights. Its aim is to promote and protect human rights in the Republic of Cyprus.

The Observatory is a system for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of human rights in the Republic of Cyprus. It monitors the relevant legislation, jurisprudence as well as incidents of human rights violations. Its object is to inspect the respect of human rights in Cyprus. The Observatory aspires to constitute a source of information on human rights and to actively participate in the public dialogue, contributing to the promotion of rights.

The Observatory deals with a range of issues inter alia equality and protection from discrimination, freedom of speech and press and environmental protection.

The focus of the institute is to:

  • Gather information and raise awareness about the protection of human rights in Cyprus and the European Union.
  • Prepare reports, recommendations and evaluations in relation to the protection of human rights in Cyprus.
  • Collaborate with local, national and international institutions and stakeholders.
  • Organise seminars and events regarding specific human rights issues.
  • Promote the respect and protection of human rights in the Republic of Cyprus.

The Observatory is based on and guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus and the Sustainable Development Goals. The actions of the Observatory are objective and unbiased.
